Summer Suggestions:

Dear Families,

Many parents often ask me for suggestions for over the summer to help when you hear “I’m bored; there is nothing to do!”   Encourage your child to read a variety of books over the summer, as well as the required summer reading books.  Take your child to the public library on a regular basis to borrow the books and participate in the summer reading program activities.  Get your child to read, read, read!  Don’t forget that early readers still enjoy listening to stories and chapter books!  Encourage your son or daughter to retell a story both orally and in writing.
Enhance your son or daughter’s math skills by having them purchase small items themselves and calculate the change.   Have your child practice saying number sentences and see if he or she can stump you or other family members.  Play games with cards where your child has to add up how many points he or she has earned.  Encourage your child to read clocks and tell you the time and calculate how many hours, minutes, or seconds they have been doing an activity for.  Have your child practice addition and subtraction skills by continuing to use the math fact triangles.
Have your child write letters to friends, grandparents, or far away relatives to keep up their writing skills.  Have your son or daughter write about the many summer activities in a summer journal or the school journal they’ll bring home.  Encourage your child to write stories about small moments they remember such as a trip, a special day, or a visit to a friend’s house.  To keep up your son or daughter’s ever improving handwriting skills have your child go through the handwriting book and go over the letters and numbers with crayons, pens, or colored pencils following the correct letter formation.  Let your son or daughter practice the second grade sight words by writing the words in sentences.  Please continue to review the first grade sight words.  Enjoy and have fun!
Have a safe and fun summer!

Fondly,

 Kathryn Lewis ☺
